Club Information
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson. Our Club “Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent” is proudly affiliated to world’s largest service organization “Lions Clubs International”. Our club is in existence since 1986. In these 35 years, we have been extensively involved in community services in various sectors like Education, Sports, Medical Environment and Relief. Our service to the community is supported by Lions Club, Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent Charity Trust and SportingLions Foundation. These 3 organisations act like pillars of support and strength to all our charitable activities and service-related projects.
Lions club is a group of likeminded, dedicated, enthusiastic & committed citizens who have focused interest in serving the society. Currently we are 70+ members. We all meet twice a month in our general meeting where we discuss current and future projects. Every member gives their valuable feedback and everyone works hand in hand leaving no man behind.
“The Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent Charity Trust” is a body which carries our out need based various service projects related to Medical, Education, Environment, Physically Challenged, Poverty, Malnutrition, Natural Calamities, Eye sight, General Health Check-ups and many others since its inception.
We are extremely proud to have been able to develop a multi sports facility on a 2-acre plot of Municipal ground at Santacruz (west). This facility is fully equipped to host various sports like Football, Cricket, Basket Ball, Kabaddi, Pickleball and Lawn Tennis. These sports activities are promoted amongst the children from Municipal schools and from under privileged backgrounds. SLF takes the onus for organising all these sporting events.
In order to adhere to laws of the land applicable to NGO and Charity activities, the trust has incorporated a company registered under Section 8 of the Indian Companies Act namely “SportingLions Foundation Pvt. Ltd.”. The SportingLions Foundation maintains the continuity of 35 years of our golden history of serving the community in a more organized format.
We dedicatedly work towards the golden words of Lions Clubs International “Where There’s a Need, There’s a Lion”. Service runs in our veins and we find our happiness in serving others. We leave you with Hindi poem lines from our very own member “बूँद बूँद जमा करे तो सागर बनत होय…सारे Lions चल पड़े तो रोक सके ना कोय!!!”
Club History
The Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent has a golden history and a great legacy of community service.
The club derives its name from Willingdon Catholic Colony situated in Santacruz (West), near Khar Subway, Mumbai. The Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana, which was one part of this colony during the period 1985 was managed by Mr. Victor D’Mello who was very keen on the promotion of the Sports activities.
He and Lion Rajani Acharya along with other members of the Willingdon Gymkhana thought of starting an NGO for service to the Community with main focus on Sports Activity. Lion Rajani Acharya being an Ex. Member of Lions Club of Khar Danda took the initiative to start Lions Club of Willingdon Crescent with many members of the Willingdon Gymkhana and the people residing nearby.
“Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent” was formally inaugurated in the month of September, 1985 by the then District Governor, Lion Pravin Sheth with 53 members. The “Charter of Lions Club” which is considered as the official recognition by Lions Clubs International was issued to us on 23rd January 1986. It was a historic moment for the club and its jubilant members.
At that time our club was a part of the larger District known as District 323 A that covered almost entire Mumbai city. Amongst the prominent lions that got connected to our club, was Lion Prem Ratan Vora from Lions Club of Chembur. Lion Prem was instrumental in starting an NGO named ‘Bombay Citizen Committee’, dedicated to serving the citizens of Mumbai.
Under the aegis of the ‘Bombay Citizen’s Committee’, Lion Rajni Acharya, Lion Samoon Rassiwala and Lion Mohsin Dhankot with contributions from other members of the club, prepared a proposal to be presented to the Municipal Commissioner. This proposal of developing sports facilities for the general public was presented to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai by lion Prem Ratan, requesting the commissioner to grant land for the same.
Looking at the activities of the Bombay Citizen Committee, the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. S. S. Tinekar agreed to allot a land near Milan Subway reserved for recreation and playground for the Sports Activity.
Though the allotted land was in dismal condition with various issues like water logging, slum demolition debris and lack of any boundary wall, the committee members decided to accept the allotment and took up the challenge of developing it.
Due to government formalities the possession of the said land came with Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent Charity Trust on 8th February 1989. Within a very short span on getting the possession, a temporary office structure was constructed and the portion of the land which was available was levelled and first Sports Activity was inaugurated at the hands of the teh Mayor on 10th March.
Over the years, under the leadership of various club presidents, the improvement of the Sports Complex continued with construction of the compound wall, ground filling with regular and red murrum soil etc.
Post this, the club worked towards development of the ground as a Sports Complex. A lawn tennis academy was set up, cricket ground built and various football and cricket tournaments organised. What was once a barren plot of land, is today a thriving centre for sports activities.
What started as a ‘dream’ turned into an incredible avenue of service. This success is an outcome of the dedicated efforts of members, Past Presidents, current team and many undocumented contributions by the members of the club.
Apart from this, Lions Club of Bombay Willingdon Crescent has had many trysts with social, medical and educational service programs and we look forward to a future filled with service.
